Chapped?

I received homemade chapstick as a gift once. It worked so well, stayed on my lips longer, and actually healed them. I've been wanting to make my own for years, but never had the time or motivation really. Well, this week the temp went from 80 to 50 overnight so I gained motivation real quick! It was actually SO easy and fast! I just want to keep making them and giving them away because of how proud I am!

Most recipes I found make 12+ sticks which was annoying.  Since this was my first time and I didn't want to use up every tube I had, I had to search for weeks for a smaller scale starter recipe.

I ended up just combing some and shrinking them. I kind of ended up guessing on my measurements and it came out to 5 tubes with a little left over. I'll tell you where I went wrong so you don't make the same mistake.

I found this cute little glass measuring cup at Target the other day. It has teaspoon measurements on it which is what I needed. In my head I could just take all the ingredients and add them to the glass while measuring. What I quickly found out was that they're all solid ingredients and it was impossible to accurately measure them that way. I would either have to melt each ingredient first or measure them in an actual teaspoon and THEN add them to the glass. Regardless, I just guessed and ended up with more than I needed.

It worked out because I had an extra one to give out and I'm using the leftover in the glass cup before I use the stick. Paul is also a huge fan of this so it's not just for girls!

Anyway, here's the recipe!

Soothing Chap Stick

Ingredients:

Directions:
  1. Combine shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil into a glass measuring cup.
  2. Heat in microwave for 40 seconds stirring half way through. Basically until the beeswax melts. The glass WILL be hot so use a towel or something to hold it and don't touch the oil. Ouch!
  3. Add the drops of essential oils and stir with a toothpick or dropper. The mixture will harden making whatever it touches messy.
  4. Either pour the mixture into the tubes or use the dropper.
  5. Let them cool. You can put them in the refrigerator if you're in a hurry to ease your chapped lips.

Helpful Tips

  1. You can always re-heat it and start over.
  2. If you decide to pour it, I would definitely get something to hold the tubes other than just your hand in case you miss.
  3. To clean everything, wipe it all down with a paper towel while it's still liquid. The less utensils you use the better.
  4. I used one of the plastic droppers that came with my glass bottle kit from Amazon and it worked great! No mess! The reason I suggest a plastic dropper instead of a glass one is because the mixture hardens. I could squeeze it out of the plastic dropper, but I can't imagine how you would get it all out of a glass one. You'd have to reheat it a few times I suppose.
  5. The mixture shrinks a little when it hardens, so you can top them off with any extra you have.
  6. Shea butter is expensive! I found a lot of cheaper options on Amazon, but payed a little more at Target for the convenience of not waiting for shipping.
  7. Beeswax is in SO MUCH! I went ahead and bought the pellets because they melt faster and I can use them in multiple recipes. However, it is cheaper to buy it in a block and shave it yourself. I'm just lazy.
  8. Here is where I get my essential oils!
